Not so unexpectedly, the general council of the united AIADMK sacked jailbird Sasikala from the post of general secretary of the party by abolishing the post itself. The party, founded by the late and legendary MGR and patronized dearly by former chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa, would now be run by a two-member panel consisting of OPS, the convener and EPS, the deputy convener.
The general council of the party, which met at Vaanagaram off Chennai yesterday, passed an all important resolution abolishing the post of general secretary of the party, thus ‘relieving’ jailbird Sasikala, who attempted to usurp power by replacing OPS as chief-minister in February before she landed up in Bangalore’s Parappana Agrahara Prison to serve a 4-year long rigorous imprisonment in the assets case.
The meeting was presided over by Presidium secretary Madhusudanan. 2,140 general council members and 296 working committee members besides MLAs and Ministers were invited to take part in the meeting, which is the first such major meeting since the OPS and EPS factions united a few weeks back to form the AIADMK of yore. The abolishing of the general secretary’s post removes jailbird Sasikala from the party.
Another resolution nullifying the appointment of jailbird Sasikala as general secretary was also passed. Likewise, the appointment of jailbird Dinakaran as deputy general secretary by jailbird Sasikala was also nullified, thus countering the threat of jailbird Dinakaran to the EPS-OPS regime. Party’s affairs would be taken care of by a 2-member panel of OPS (the convener) and EPS (the deputy convener).
A committee has also been set up to guide the party and the government and adequate changes have been made in the party’s rules and regulations to enable the formation of such a committee. The 2-member panel would enjoy sweeping powers
