It is reported that the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu might join the Union Cabinet in the next few weeks’ time.
Both the EPS and OPS factions of the AIADMK united on 21st August (yesterday), dubbed as a ‘historic’ event by former chief-minister O. Panneerselvam who took over as the State’s deputy chief-minister as per the arrangement which paved the way for merger of the factions. OPS has also been made the convener of the united AIADMK while chief-minister EPS would be the deputy convener.
It is said that the AIADMK may follow Bihar’s Janata Dal (U) in entering the Union Cabinet by formally entering the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is led by the BJP which has a majority of its own in the Lok Sabha, thanks to the ‘Modi wave’ which swept the country prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
It turns out that the BJP might offer two posts of Union Ministers to the AIADMK, similar to the manner in which DMK occupied places in the Union Cabinet during the erstwhile Congress-led UPA regime at the Centre from 2004-14. Names of AIADMK’s Vaithilingam, BJP’s Dr. Maitreyan and Ila Ganesan figure in the list of probables shortlisted to be made Union Ministers.
