It has been informed that the Centre has blocked 81 lakh ‘not-in-use’ Aadhaar cards across the country.
The cards have been blocked based on surveys conducted across the States and Union Territories, it is further reported. “Surveys conducted across the country revealed that many Aadhaar cards remained unused by the respective beneficiaries after which it was decided to block those cards,” it has been informed in a communiqué.
The ‘blocking’ of cards has been done as per provisions governing distribution and issuance of Aadhaar cards. Officials in concerned States have been authorized to block or freeze the unused Aadhaar cards. It may be recalled that only recently, the Centre announced that 11.45 lakh PAN cards were being blocked as they remained unused for long.
