During a recent chat with the media, Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall said that she considers herself a mother despite not having an offspring.
While guest-editing on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, the 59-year-old English-Canadian actress pointed out that being a mother is not just about giving birth and changing nappies. She stressed that she may not be a biological parent, but has young actors and actresses that she mentors, nieces and nephews that she is very close to.
She added that there’s a way to become a mother in today’s era, which doesn’t require the person’s name on the child’s birth certificate – that it allows women to express their maternal side very strongly, further harping on it being very satisfying.
According to her, people shouldn’t label women like her ‘childless’ as it sounds very offensive – that no women is less in any way, because of not having her own child.
On being quizzed about why she never thought of starting a family, she said that it was never a conscious choice. The fact that she was so happy and things were going so well in her career that she kept delaying things.
