The first trailer for The Weinstein Co.’s The Current War debuted online on Thursday. It features Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon embroiled in a battle as inventors Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, respectively.
The Current War takes place in 1879 and follows Edison, who championed using direct current for electric-power distribution over alternating current, which was supported by several European companies, including Westinghouse Electric. The movie has been directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, from a screenplay by Michael Mitnick.
Apart from Cumberbatch and Shannon, the movie also includes Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, and Nicholas Hoult.
The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a limited release on November 24, followed by a wide release on January 19.
