Vimal is being like a Cat on the Wall

Actor Vimal debuted in director Pandiraj’s ‘Pasanga’ a couple of years back. Vimal followed up the film’s mega-success at the box-office with a couple of hits last year in Sargunam’s ‘Kalavaani’ opposite newcomer Oviya and ‘Thoonga Nagaram’ opposite Anjali. Last week, Vimal had another release in the form of ‘Eththan’, produced by the same producer who produced ‘Kalavaani’.
With successive hit films putting him in the league of bankable actors, Vimal is said to have hiked his fee to a whopping Rs.60 lakh per film. Reports also say that the film ‘Kalingathuparani’, a film he had earlier agreed to star for a fee of Rs.15 lakhs, has also got stuck due to the steep rise in fee demanded by the star.
‘Eththan’, though, is getting a ‘mixed response’ from the public, say trade circles. It is said that while the first-half of the film is engrossing, the second-half drags too much, making the viewers yawn too frequently. The film might just recover its production cost but can nowhere become a superhit film such as ‘Kalavaani’ or ‘Pasanga’, it is pointed out.
Minimum-budget films like ‘Eththan’ might over-shoot the originally estimated budget by a few lakhs. If the film manages a better show at the box-office for the first few weeks, the extra amount can easily be recovered. This hasn’t been the case with ‘Eththan’, trade pundits say. As such, a producer who recently met Vimal to start a film with him, has asked him reduce his fee by half and offered him only Rs.30 lakhs to star in his film!
Vimal is said to be playing a ‘wait-and-watch’ game; if ‘Eththan’ manages to pick up its box-office collection and ends up as an average hit film, Vimal might stick to his fee of Rs.60 lakhs. On the contrary, if the film ends up as a losing preposition, Vimal might settle for Rs.30 lakhs as his fee for his next film.
