Notwithstanding the legal tangle the title of Vijay’s upcoming film Thuppakki has gotten itself into, the process of acquiring the film’s distribution rights in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere has already started. Reports say that Shobharani has acquired the film’s distribution and release rights in Andhra Pradesh for a record price.
Thuppakki (the title might undergo a change in the near future) has turned out to be the highest-grossing Vijay-starrer vis-à-vis the rates for the release and distribution. The Telugu rights have been acquired at a high cost of Rs.15 crore, it is said. A major reason is that Kajal Aggarwal, who pairs up opposite Vijay for the first time in the film, is already a hugely popular and a successful heroine in Tollywood.
More than Vijay, Kajal did the trick in getting the film a record price, sources close to Shobha says. Usually, release rights of films starring superstar Rajinikanth, Vikram and Suriya are sold at high rates in the neighbouring State. With Thuppakki, Vijay too has joined the list. Shobha beat many competitors to acquire the film’s release rights in Tollywood, it is further reported.
Produced by Kalaipuli Thaanu and directed by A.R. Murugadoss, Thuppakki is not out of the woods as far as the legal tangle of using the ‘title’ is concerned. Readers might recall that Shobharani is the same person who was rumoured to be having an affair with the versatile Prakashraj a few years back!
