It is said that immediately after the release of his much-awaited Mani Rathnam-directed ‘Raavanan’, actor ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram wanted to have a formal session with presspersons with whom he wanted to share his thoughts, observations and experiences during the making of the film, his first with ex-Miss World Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan.
The date was fixed as 19th June and the venue was a five-star hotel in the city. In the meantime, he got a call from Mani Rathnam who advised Vikram to first go to the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and interact with the Telugu press there and get a feel of their as well as the audience’s pulse on the eve of the release of the Telugu version of ‘Raavan’ titled ‘Villain’.
Cancelling his Chennai press-meet, the ever-obliging Vikram went to Hyderabad. Even before his return to Chennai, he found out that the review of ‘Raavanan’ by the media was far from helpful and encouraging and that the film had been ‘dissected’ beyond imagination. As if to add fuel to the fire, the news that the film had ‘miserably flopped’ at the box-office reached his ears.
The clash between Amitabh Bachchan and Mani Rathnam (the former attacked the screenplay of the film while the latter defended it) was the last ‘straw’ that ‘broke the Camel’s back’, as far as Vikram was concerned. Vikram decided that the time was ‘not ripe’ for his meeting with the press and has, therefore, postponed his meeting with them indefinitely.
