Director Bala’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful Pithamagan is all set to be remade in Hindi. The film, which won for actor Vikram the national award for ‘best actor’, starred Suriya, Laila, Sangeetha and many others in lead roles and was a box-office hit in Tamil.
It is said that Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan might play the role essayed by Suriya and Vikram in the Tamil version in that order. Pithamagan released in 2003 and had Simran, who was a leading starlet in those days, in ‘special appearance’ dancing for a song in the film. Vikram’s portrayal of a person whose profession was to bury corpses was appreciated by one and all and eventually bagged him the coveted national award.
The trend of remaking Tamil super-duper hits in Hindi has been there for the past 15 years or so and has become too frequent in the past few years. Suriya’s Ghajini, Singam and Kakka Kakka have all been made in Hindi starring popular Bollywood heroes. Now, Pithamagan too joins the list. It may be noted that Vikram’s Bala-directed Sethu was also remade in Hindi some time back starring Salman Khan in the lead.
Boney Kapoor, popular film-maker and husband of yesteryear’s leading actress Sridevi, vied along with other film-makers such as David Dhawan and Vashu Bhagnani to acquire the Hindi remake rights of Pithamagan. However, it was actor-turned-director Sathish Kaushik who managed to bag the remake rights.
