Ever since super-star Rajinikanth delivered his super-hit film ‘Annamalai’ in the mid-nineties, whichever hero takes on the role of a cattle-breeder in films is referred to as Annamalai. Such was the magnitude of the success of ‘Annamalai’, produced by veteran director K. Balachander’s Kavithalaaya, that the name Annamalai has become synonymous with a cattle-breeder.
Vijay plays a cattle-breeder in his upcoming film ‘Velayudham’ directed by ‘Jayam’ Raja. Raja, who is known for churning out hit films which are mostly remakes, has taken up the Telugu film ‘Azad’ and remade it into ‘Velayudham’. With his deft touches and Vijay’s action sequences, the film is billed as the ‘next big thing’ in Kollywood after superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Enthiran: The Robot’.
The film pits the beautiful Hansika opposite Vijay for the first time. Genelia, who played Vijay’s heroine in his earlier film ‘Sachin’, gets to pair up opposite him again in ‘Velayudham’, reportedly produced at a whopping budget of Rs.45 crores by Ravichandran’s Ascar Films. Genelia plays a journalist in the film.
Diminutive Saranya Mohan, who played heroine in ‘Vennila Kabadikuzhu’, plays Vijay’s sister in a significant role in the film. The crew prides itself that the bonding between Vijay and Saranya is almost similar to the celebrated and widely appreciated brother-sister bonding displayed by the late and legendary actors, Sivaji Ganesan and Savithri in the ever-green hit ‘Paasamalar’.
Santhanam takes care of the comic portions in the film along with M.S. Baskar.
