Surabhi, who debuted as heroine in Kollywood in Saravanan’s Ivan Veramathiri opposite Vikram Prabhu, played a small yet significant role in Dhanush’s super-duper hit film Velaiyilla Pattathari. She now has a handful of films in Pugazh opposite Jai, Ram Gopal Verma’s Attack and another Telugu film opposite Sharwanand.
The petite beauty, however, asserts that her immediate objective is to make it count in Kollywood. “I don’t want to be one of the many heroines here; I want to be taken note of by critics and audiences as an actress of substance. I’m getting lots of offers from various film-makers; however, I choose my films based on the script and the strength of my character in those scripts.
“Set in a small town, the script of Pugazh has me playing a strong-willed character. I play an engineering graduate seeking suitable employment. It’s a role which offers me lots of scope to display my acting credentials. Director Manimaran has conceived the script in an interesting manner. My character, in particular, is that of a courageous homely girl which I hope would be loved by audiences.
“Jai is very friendly on the sets. I feel we look very good as an on-screen pair,” says Surabhi who plans to dub for her characters in her own voice in a few months’ time. “Though I have the image of a ‘homely’ girl in Tamil films, I’m not averse to taking up glam-filled roles; after all, as an actress, am I not expected to take up all kinds of roles to prove my mettle?” asks Surabhi, giving one of her ‘killer’ smiles!
