Veteran Malayalam actress Sheela has decided to aling herself with the Congress (I), the major party at the ruling coalition at the Centre. The 70-year old veteran, who has made Chennai her home for the past many decades, is said to have decided to shift to her native State of Kerala so as to enable her to work for the party provided she is given some ‘plum’ posting in the party.
Sheela, known as Chemmeen Sheela in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere, has said that she is ready to work for the welfare of women and children. She met Union Defence minister A.K. Antony, a popular politician from Kerala, recently and expressed her wish to align with the Congress party. Shen then told newspersons that she’d reveal her future plans after an official announcement is made about her joining the party.
“I wish to work for the welfare and development of women and children in my native Kerala. If I’m offered a suitable post (in the party), I’m ready to take it; in such a scenario, I’m even ready to shift my base from Chennai to Kerala on a permanent basis. It’s not an easy decision for me to take to politics. I thought about it for many months and then made the decision.
“I don’t pluge into politics for my own interest. I don’t want anything and I only want to achieve the satisfaction of serving the people. Unlike in Tamil Nadu, people in Kerala don’t take filmy persons seriously when they enter politics. I believe people would accept me as I’m not entering politics to earn name and fame or money,” said Sheela, who was introduced into films by the late and legendary MGR in his Paasam.
Sheela’s last on-screen outing was in the superstar Rajinikanth-starrer Chandramukhi a few years back.
