Superstar Rajinikanth’s 62nd birthday was celebrated with the usual excitement and festive spirit by his millions of fans across the globe on Monday (12th). The celebrations were visibly on a large scale this time as the fans felt that their Thalaivar had been given a ‘second lease of life’ by the Almighty after Rajini recovered from his kidney-related ailments which plagued him in the middle of this year.
As part of the birthday celebrations, Rajini’s fans had organized a gathering of fans and well-wishers at Chennai’s Valluvar Kottam yesterday evening. Posters across the city’s walls screamed that leading luminaries of Kollywood would be taking part in the event to wish the star a happy birthday. Rajini, though, had been to Mantralayam on his birthday to offer ‘special prayers’ to the Shirdi Saibaba’s Temple.
Even as the scheduled time of 04:00 p.m. approached, the sprawling Valluvar Kottam appeared to have dwindled as Rajini’s fans in large numbers started gathering at the venue hoping to get a glimpse of their ‘ever-green’ hero. The security arrangements in place at the venue were almost equal to the one which is usually put in place for a chief minister. All the entry points were covered and only those who had the invitation and passes were allowed inside.
The event kicked off with many cultural programmes and the giving away of welfare schemes to 62 students to mark the star’s 62nd birthday. S.P. Muthuraman, the veteran director who has made as may as 25 films starring the superstar, ‘Kalaipuli’ Thaanu, T.G. Thiagaraan and many others were present. Though the fans had an enjoyable time, they were very disappointed that Rajini didn’t make it to the event.
Rajini had earlier instructed his fans to complete the event by 08:00 p.m. so as not to trouble the general public by causing traffic jams. As it turned out, the event continued well after 09:00 p.m. Rajini’s absence props up the question of when he would be meeting his fans who have been anxious for an audience with him ever since he returned to Chennai from Singapore after recovering successfully from his illness!
