he 78-year old Sundaram has produced many significant films in Kollywood including Pudhiya Paadhai, which was actor-director Parthiban’s debut film as hero and which also won him a national award. Sundaram also produced the Vasanth-directed Keladi Kanmani, an ever-green musical hit by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja.
Sundaram debuted as producer with the film Mr. Sampath which was incidentally directed by Cho Ramaswamy, veteran journalist. He also made the hightly critically acclaimed Yaarukkum Vetkamillai, which was again directed by Cho. Sundram is credited with identifying the talented Pathiban, who was a greenhorn at that time, and producing Pudhiya Paadhai in the late eighties.
Parthiban directed Pudhiya Paadhai besides playing the lead role in the film, which won the national award for ‘best feature film’. It also won for ‘Aachi’ Manorama the national award for ‘best supporting actress’. Sundaram made another Parthiban-starrer in Pondatti Thevai. Vasanth’s Keladi Kanmani produced by Sundaram had legendary playback singer SPB playing the lead role opposite Radhika.
Sundaram, who had been unwell for the past year or so, was affected by severe infection in the lungs and the end came on Friday.
His body was cremated on 29th September at 01:00 p.m. after the likes of diretor K. Balachander, Vasanth, Parthiban, Cho Ramaswamy and several other Kollywood personalities paid homage to him.
Sundaram is survived by his wife Banumathi, son Balaji and daughter Abirami.
