Thursday (July 7) was momentous for Prabhu Deva — the Chennai Principal family court granted him a divorce from his estranged wife Ramlath. The judge, TCS Raja Chockalingam, said the marriage conducted on September 8, 1995 was being dissolved on mutual consent. Both of them had agreed that they would not make any claim, including maintenance and property against each other, in future, the order said.
The media persons gathered at the courtroom were disappointed, as both Prabhu Deva and Ramlath did not appear before the court.
Talking to DC, P. Anandhan, counsel for Ramlath said, “They were not required to be present today. The complete hearing was over on July 2 and today was the final judgment. The principal family court judge Raja Chockalingam granted a divorce to Prabhu Deva from his wife Ramlath after he executed whatever he had promised.”
The actor has paid Rs 10 lakh to Latha as permanent alimony. He also transferred a piece of property in Anna Nagar along with two cars to her name. Prabhu Deva transferred a 22-cent land at Injambakkam village and his property at ‘Alekhyas Kaushik Meadows’ in the names of his two children. Though both children were under Latha’s custody, the court granted Prabhu Deva the liberty to have access to them as he wished. He also agreed to bear cost of their education, marriage and other expenses in future.
Prabhu Deva and Ramlath, who married in 1995, have been living separately since January 2008.The tension between the couple began when the actor-director started dating Nayanthara, with whom he worked in Villu.
In the course of their divorce proceedings, the couple was firm that there was no possibility of reconciliation. Earlier, Superstar Rajinikanth had also intervened in the matter and had asked Prabhu Deva and Ramlath to get back together, but in vain.
Now that they are legally divorced, the dancing sensation can gear up for his marriage to Nayanthara, the ex-diva of south films. But the million dollar question on everyone’s lips is, “When and where will the love birds tie the knot?”
