It might sound a bit odd; but in Kollywood an actor is either valued or de-valued depending upon the box-office standing of his latest film. Going by that way, nobody appears to be as successful as Saranya Ponvannan, who has taken Kollywood by storm in he second innings and in playing mother to all leading young heroes!
Saranya, who debuted as Kamal Haasan’s heroine in Maniratnam’s ‘Nayagan’ in the late eighties, starred in more than 50 films and married actor-director Ponvannan and settled down in marital life in the nineties. It was Ponvannan who reportedly encouraged her to try her hand at acting again, which she did in Ameer’s ‘Ram’ as Jiiva’s mother.
She has never turned back and has become the leading ‘mother’ actress in Kollywood ever since. In last year’s hit film ‘Kalavaani’, Saranya’s acting and her pairing with Ilavarasu came in for much appreciation. The actress referred to this at the recent audio release of her upcoming film titled ‘Muthukku Muthaga’.

She said she had ‘five sons and five daughters-in-laws’ in the film and hinted that she was aware that she had become the ‘first choice’ of producers and directors when it comes to choosing an actress for the ‘mother’ role. Ilavarasu, who too stars in the film, narrated how he managed to ‘wrest’ from the director the role he has played in the film, which was to be played by actor Nasser.
“I have loved watching Saranya in ‘Nagayan’ and never thought I’d be pairing up opposite her in films. I am happy that I got to play the role I have played in the film,” said Ilavarasu and said that the on-screen ‘chemistry’ between him and Saranya was working out nicely for themselves as well as for the producers and directors!
