Nayanthara is the cynosure of all eyes after making a comeback to films more than a couple of months after coming out of her self-imposed break following the split in her affair with choreographer-director Prabhudeva which had a three-and-a-year long duration. Looking fresh and cheerful, the actress is presently shooting in Chennai for her upcoming film opposite Ajith which is untitled and directed by Vishnuvardhan.
Nayan has a handful of offers in Telugu and has been shuttling frequently between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to meet her shooting commitments. She was said to be offered a role in ace director Maniratnam’s upcoming film Kadal which marks the debut of Gautham (son of actor Karthik) and Thulasi (daughter of yesteryear’s heroine Radha).
Readers might recall that Karthick and Radha debuted as on-screen pair in the early eighties in Bharathiraaja’s super-duper hit film Alaigal Oyvathillai. Maniratnam is making Kadal after the huge box-office debacle he had to endure with his last directorial venture in Raavanan more than two years back. Kadal (Sea) is already looked forward to with interest by distributors for its unique pair of lead actors.
Mani reportedly sounded Nayanthara for playing a brief role of ‘action king’ Arjun’s wife in the film. Arjun plays a naval officer in the film which deals with the many problems faced by Indian fishermen off the coast of Rameswaram as they have been continually hounded by the navy of a neighbouring country (read Sri Lanka). However, Nayanthara had turned down the offer saying she can’t be seen pairing up opposite a ‘senior’ hero like Arjun.
The role offered by Maniratnam was a brief yet effective one. With Nayan turning down the offer, hunt is on for a suitable actress to step in to the role. Arvind Swamy, who played the hero in Maniratnam’s super-duper hit films such Roja and Bombay in the nineties, plays a Catholic priest in Kadal which is progressing in a brisk manner.
