An emergency meeting of the Nadigar Sangam is being convened today apparently to discuss the impact of the crisis that has severely hit the Tamil film industry due to the on-going wages dispute between FEFSI and the Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC). The meeting would also seek to find ways and means of solving the crisis which has blown away the façade of unity among the various technicians in Kollywood.
The meeting of the Sangam, which is to be held at the sprawling Green Park hotel in Vadapalani in Chennai, is expected to be attended by all leading actors and actresses including the likes of superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. The wages dispute took an ugly turn when the wages and salaries proposed by FEFSI was summarily rejected by the Council who went ahead and formed a separate Film Employees’ Union. Mediatory talks attempted by the labour welfare board of the State government too failed to bring about an amicable solution to the issue following which FEFSI announced ‘indefinite strike’ by its workers and employees from 7th April onwards.
The strike covers wide-ranging technicians including light-men, stunt artistes, junior artistes (actors/actresses), art directors, assistant directors, make-up artistes and drivers and has thrown the shooting schedules of the various films under protection in a state of limbo. The shooting of at least 35 films has been stalled due to the strike which is getting worse with each passing day.
Sarath Kumar and Radharavi, the president and general secretary of the Sangam, would be leading the actors and actresses who would be taking part in the emergency meeting. For the sake of the film industry and for the benefit of the families of those involved, let’s earnestly hope that the Sangam irons out some sort of an amicable solution acceptable to FEFSI as well as the Council.
