Multi-faceted SS Kumaran says his passion is in film-making

Music director S.S. Kumaran turns director with the film ‘Theneer Viduthi’, which would soon be hitting the screens. Kumaran, who has scored some melodious numbers in films like Sasi’s ‘Poo’ and Sargunam’s ‘Kalavaani’, insists that his passion had always been ‘film-making’ but doesn’t rule out the possibility of continuing as a music composer as well.

Tracing Kumaran’s background throws up some interesting info indeed. Kumaran had indeed done a course in cinematography in the late eighties at the Film Institute. Later on, he had worked on contract-basis as a corporate film maker for Chennai Port Trust. During his stint with the Port Trust, Kumaran is said to have made more than 200 corporate films, training modules and documentaries for his organization.

“Deep down my heart, I’m a film maker; composing music and cinematography came much later,” says Kumaran, who has managed to wrap up the entire shooting of ‘Theneer…’ in one single schedule. The cast and technicians offered great cooperation which made it possible, says Kumaran and reveals that he didn’t narrate the story to his actors prior to the film but only narrated the story in bits and parts.

The film is about the unsung workers in villages who are indulged in the profession of erecting pandals for marriages held in their locality. “I have tried my best to record their lives and feelings. The villain and the hero never comes face to face with each other in the entire film. Likewise, the expression of ‘love’ by the lead pair would also be very different,” assures Kumaran.

Censors reportedly cleared the film with an ‘U’ certificate after appreciating Kumaran’s work in presenting a ‘decent and neat’ film.
