Ace director Maniratnam has been quiet for the past one year or so. His much-hyped and much-awaited Raavanan didn’t exactly scorch the box-office when it was released in theatres last year. Despite a huge star cast in Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Prithviraj, Karthick and Priyamani (albeit in a brief role) and notwithstanding some lovely music by Rahman, the film fell flat at the box-office.
After more than an year now, Maniratnam has finalized the script of his next directorial venture and has named it as Pookkadai. The film might see Mani introducing actor Karthick’s son Gautham as hero. Readers might recall that as on date, Karthick has starred in films like Agni Natchathiram, Mouna Raagam and Raavanan under Maniratnam’s direction.
Karthika, who debuted successfully as heroine in Tamil with Ko opposite Jiiva early this year, might be roped in as Gautham’s heroine, it is reliably learnt. Lakshmi Manchu, film producer and daughter of Telugu star Mohanbabu, has also been signed up to play a significant role in the film.
Mani is said to have visited the coastal areas of Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram last week along with his team of aides to select suitable locations for the shooting of Pookkadai. Music would be by A.R. Rahman while cinematographer-turned-director Rajiv Menon would be the cameraman. It is also said that other technicians and the rest of the actors and actresses would be decided later.
