‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan has described the late S.N. Lakshmi as a ‘mightily talented actress who was a treasure’ to Tamil films. Lakshmi, who passed away in Chennai a couple of days back, has starred in many of Kamal’s films. Lakshmi’s roles in Kamal’s films like Virumandi,Mahanadhi and Thevar Magan were not only brief but memorable.
Lakshmi, who is fondly referred to as ‘Lakshmi Amma’ by her colleagues in the film industry, breathed her last in Chennai on the morning of Monday, the 20th February. She was shooting for a tele-serial when she accidentally slipped and got injured on her spinal chord which later proved to be fatal.
Kamal, who is presently shooting in Mumbai for his upcoming film Viswaroopam, ha said that “I know Lakshmi Amma very well and have many times appreciated her extra-ordinary acting skills. Her characters in Michael Madana Kamarajan and Virumandi were divergent and were performed well by her. I had told her many a time that she had started playing mother’s roles right from a very young age in her life.
“She’d nod in agreement…she had played mother to many of her contemporary actors like MGR, Sivaji and R.S. Manohar. It’s rather unfortunate that experience and talented performers like SNL, ‘Kakka’ Radhakrishnan and Nagesh are no more with us. I had always wanted not to waste their vast acting potential and talents and had used them in my films to the maximum extent possible.
“Though Lakshmi Amma is not with us, her soul is still with us to guide us in future. She had a quick-silver brain and would grasp her character in a(ny) film after listening to the narration just once and would end up performing in such a way that it which would be far more than what her directors would have expected,” concluded Kamal.
