Neerkumizhi, one of veteran director K. Balachander’s all-time classic films, is likely to be remade, it is reported. Due to paucity of scripts and script-writes, Tamil film-makers have increasingly taken to remaking successful hits of the previous decades. Comedian Vivek is likely to play the lead role in the remake version in a role made legendary by the late comedian Nagesh.
The remake version of Neerkumizhi is to be directed by Selva, widely referred to as a ‘remake specialist’ in Kollywood circles. Selva is a protégé of Balachander and is sure that the latest version with Vivekh in the lead would be as engrossing as the original. Released in 1965, the Nagesh-starrer Neerkumizhi had many senior artistes including Muthuraman. However, Nagesh played the central role in the film and won the hearts of the audiences.
The film has many immortal song sin it including the Aadi Adangum Vaazkaiyada… rendered with aplomb by the late and legendery ‘Seergazhi’ Govindarajan. This is not the first time that Selva is attempting a remake of his mentor’s film. He had already remade successfully the film Naan Avan Illai which starred the late Gemini Ganesan in the lead role and was directed by Balachander.
Speaking about his remake of Neerkumizhi, Selva says “Remake versions are only good for the industry and they are not to be viewed with contempt. In a way, it helps recall the scripts of classic films made in the past and relive them. We are in the process of securing the remake rights of the film. As and when we do so, a formal announcement would be made. As of now, I can only say that Vivek would be playing Nagesh’s role.”
