The versatile actor Vijayakumar turns 61 today, born on August 29, 1949. The senior Kollywood film artiste is also completing his 50 years in cine industry and has acted in more than 400 films inclusive of Tamil and Telugu films.The actor has played a variety of films and at his peak, it was thought a perfect film needed Vijayakumar in the supporting cast.
Who would believe that he did the role of Lord Muruga in “Sri Valli” that featured Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini, in 1961-62.
Vijayakumar who started off as a child artist, grew into a hero and is now a busy star doing character-oriented roles.
After his debut movie “Sri Valli” the actor became a full-fledged stage actor. The film which gave a path entry to film industy was “Ponnukku Thangam Manasu” which was released in 1973 directed by Madhavan. Vijayakumar had played a lead role along with another hero Sivakumar.
In his 50 years long career in film industry he has acted as a friend, villain, brother and father of almost all leading heroes including his contemporary star Rajinikanth at various points in time of his film career.
The most noteworthy films are “Azhage Unnai Aradhikkerain” (Sridhar), “Agni Nakshathiram” (Mani Ratnam), the first film in which he acted as father of two top heroes of Tamil filmdom: Karthik and Prabhu, “Kizhakku Chemaiyile” (Bharathiraja), “Velai Kidachirukku” (P. Vasu) and “Anthi Mantharai” (Bharathiraja) .
Of course nobody would forget his role in the block-buster hit “Nattamai” directed by KS Ravikumar.
The actor on his 50-year completion said, “I was happy as a hero. But I am happier doing character roles. When you play a character role, irrespective of whether the film flops or succeeds people will remember your acting. That is the best compliment for any actor.
Still, I do not think I have achieved anything in life. Acting is my bread and butter and I do not know anything else.”
