Ace director Mani Ratnam is busy with the shooting schedule of his upcoming film titled Kadal (meaning ‘sea’ in English). Though he hasn’t acknowledged it in public, Mani is under immense pressure to deliver a super-duper hit film at the box-office as hit last film Raavanan didn’t do a grat business at the box-office despite the presence of Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan.
Kadal stars Gautham Karthik, son of veteran actor Karthick, in the lead. Teenager Gautham has been paired up opposite another teenager Thulasi, second and youngest daughter of Radha, one of yesteryear’s most successful heroines. Incidentally, Karthick himself had starred in many successful Maniratnam movies such as Agni Natchathiram, Mouna Raagam and Raavanan.
Gautham is said to have ‘impressed’ Mani a lot by his performance in his very first film. The script is said to be based on the lives and travails of the fishermen who depend on the ocean for ther livelihood. In between, Mani has reportedly included ‘politics’ by touching upon the issue of constant attacks by the Lankan navy on the Indian (read: Tamilian) fishermen.
Thulasi, younger sibling of Karthika (of Ko fame), is also said to have put in tremendous work in her very first outing which made Mani proud of his selection. It is a well-known fact that Mani, who has been in the industry now for more than two decades, is a master at bringing out the best in an actor.
As such, we can only look forward to a better performance from Mani himself in Kadal!
