It appears to be the year in which leading comedians have decided to turn producers. Close on the heels of comedian Santhanam turning producer with the upcoming film Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiyaa (KLTA), it’s now the turn of his fellow comedian ‘Ganja’ Karuppu to test the waters in film production.
Industry watchers say that Karuppu, who is senior to Santhanam in terms of the number of years he’s been in Kollywood, might have felt the need to plunge himself into films because of Santhanam’s decision to make films. The ‘good samaritan’ Karuppu has been openly and actively involved in many welfare measures aimed at helping the people in as many ways as possible.
Karuppu’s maiden production has been named as Velmurugan Borewell. Karuppu debuted as an actor with Bala’s Pithamagan which was a critically acclaimed film as well as a commercial success. The film is best remembered for actor Vikram who won the national award for ‘best actor’ for his role in the film. Karuppu then played a major role in Ameer’s thriller Ram.
Films like Paruthiveeran, Sandakozhi and Subramaniapuram followed which made Karuppu establish his stature as one of the leading comedians in Tamil films. He has named his production house as K.K. Films International. Gopi, who directed the Karan-Shammu starrer Malaiyan more than a couple of years ago, would be directing Velmurugan Borewell.
Mahesh of Angadi Theru fame plays the hero. The heroine and the other artistes would be finalized and informed later, Karuppu says. Understandably, he plays an important role in the film.
