Periya Karuppu Thevar, popular stage and film actor and folk singer, breathed his last in Chennai. Hailing from Karumathur in Madurai District, he 75-year old, big moustached PKT (as he is referred to by his friends in the film industry) had been a resident of Chennai’s Saligramam locality for the past many years.
PKT was part of the hugely popular drama troupe floated by veteran Sankaradoss Swamigal more than fifty years ago. Like many actors of his era, he had made the grade to films as an actor after toiling hard on stage where he used to be quite popular for his acting as well as in signing many folk songs.
His career in films has spanned many decades wherein he had starred in more than 200 films including a memorable role in Bharathiraaja’s Mann Vasanai and in Gangai Amaren’s Karagattakkaran which had memorable songs by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. PKT had also song a hugely popular song in Kamal Haasan’s Virumandi a few years back. PKT’s wife Annamayil expired some time back.
He is survived by his four sons out of which Palpandi had recently been blessed with a male child. PKT was obviously happy and was preparing to go to Madurai to see his new-born grand-child when he suffered a massive cardiac arrest at his Saligramam residence. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he breathed his last after sustained treatment.
Leading industry bigwigs paid floral tributes to PKT after which the body was taken to his native village in Karumathur. Let’s pray to God to lay his soul in lasting peace!
