Chennai is gearing up to host the 9th International Film Festival for 9 days from the 14th to the 22nd of this month. This year, as many as 154 films are likely to be screened, out of which 133 would be foreign films chosen from 44 countries around the globe. Woodlands, Woodlands Symphony, Sathyam Cinemas, Inox Compalex and Film Chamber have been chosen as the venues where these films would be screened on the above-said dates.
Popular Bollywood director Shekar Kapoor, nephew of the legendary actor Dev Anand who passed away last week, would be inaugurating the Film Festival in the city on 14th. The Festival would have a strong European presence with films from countries such as France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Finland and Belgium besides Canada, Australia, Egypt and Iran. Out of the 154 foreign films, 9 films had already been screened at the Indian Panorama.
As many as 12 Tamil films including Avan Ivan, Aadukalam, Maidaanam, Muran, Engeyum Eppodhum, Vaagai Sooda Vaa, Varnam, Vengayam, Deivathirumagal, Thoonganagaram, Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai and Ko would be screened during the Festival. Cartoonist Madhan, actor and film-maker Prathap Pothan and actress Rohini would be part of the Jury who would be judging the films.
Students from the New College would be working during the Festival as volunteers. For the benefit of the directors and film-makers of Kollywood, a ‘Red Carpet Screening’ has been arranged wherein a film would be telecast every night at the Inox Complex. For the Festival to turn out to be a success, actor Sarath Kumar and ‘power star’(???) Dr. Srinivasan and many other Kollywood big-wigs have donated liberally.
