Veteran director Bharathiraaja announced that a massive protest would be held by the film industry against the hanging of the trio Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan (the main accused in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the then prime minister).
An emergency meeting of the Directors’ Association, which is headed by Bharathiraaja, was called for on August 26, 2011. Directors Cheran, SP Jananathan and few more directors participated. After the deliberations were over, Bharathiraaja spoke to newsmen and said that the Association felt paned at the fixing of the date for hanging the trio. “We have planned to hold a massive demonstration to protest against the verdict of the Court. Actors, actresses, directors and lawyers would be taking part in the protest.
“We request Amma to kindly intervene in the matter to save the lives of the trio. We would soon be penning a detailed letter requesting Amma to do so. We are planning to meet the chief minister in person to hand over our letter of request. We believe that Amma has the power at her disposal to do the needful. We would feel obliged if she intervenes to save the trio’s lives.
“I also request the print and television media to cover this issue widely to as to reach as many people as we can. The media, which has covered the ‘Lokpal’ protest-through-fasting of Anna Hazare to the maximum extent possible, should do the same for this cause too,” said the veteran director.
