Veteran actress S.N. Lakshmi passed away in Chennai yesterday. The 85-year old was the only actress who had proved that an actress should be talented and needn’t be a successful heroine to be remembered by the people.
Lakshmi, who had played to her contemporary heroes like the legendary MGR and Sivaji Ganesan, continued to act with more than five generations of actors and actresses. Her character in Thulabaram still makes old-timers cry; she has also acted in about 1,000 films.
The not-so-known side of Lakshmi was that she was a very talented athlete as well; during her younger days, she used to perform somersault on stage and was even adept in sword-fighting. She had even fought with a leopard, heavily drugged though, in the MGR-starrer Baghdad Thirudan many decades back.
Despite her age, she had been shooting for films and tele-serials till a few days before her untimely demise. Lakshmi had a fall recently when she accidentally slipped while filming a tele-serial and got injured in her spinal chord. She had been admitted to a leading private hospital where she succumbed to her injuries yesterday morning. Lakshmi, who never married, had been residing at her Saligramam residence with the grand-daughters of her brother.
Actors Sarathkumar,Radharavi,SP Muruthuraman paid their last respects to Lakshmi whose cremation takes place today at her native village in Chennalkudi in Virudhunagar District.
Let’s pray for the great soul to remain in eternal peace!
