Veteran actress Gandhimathi, who has been in the Tamil film industry for more than the past three decades, breathed her last today. The actress, who has starred in more than 300 films in her career, passed away at a private hospital in Chennai this morning. Gandhimathi was one of the few actresses who could take on character as well as comic roles with consummate ease.
Gandhimathi had acted with the likes of the late and legendary MGR and Sivaji Ganesan and has also starred with superstar Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Vijaykanth. Known for her clear diction and forceful pronunciation, Gandhimathi famously played actress Sridevi’s mother in the latter’s debut film 16 Vayadhinilae directed by Bharathiraaja. She then became almost a regular in all the films made by Bharathiraaja.
As stated earlier, she had portrayed a variety of roles in her illustrated career with roles ranging from comedy, villainy and character-based ones. Her role in ‘Karagattakkaran’, directed by Gangai Amaran, was widely appreciated by the press and the public alike. She was diagnosed with heart disease in the year 2000 and was admitted to Chennai’s Apollo Hospitals where she stayed for a few days.
After surgery, she had taken a long hiatus from films and was doing only sundry roles. She was, however, active in playing major roles in tele-strials. Hailing from Sivaganga District, Gandhimathi was staying at her residence in Chennai’s Vadapalani. Her son Deenadhayalan had announced that her cremation would be taking place this evening. Actors Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Radhika Sarathkumar, Goundamani, Senthil,Vaagai Chandrasekar paid their homage to the veteran actress.
Let’s pray to the Almighty to keep her soul in lasting peace!
