Controversy-marred 9th edition of the Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) kicked off here today as the directors’ body of the multi-million Tamil cinema industry announced boycott of the event. The ninth edition, which has the state government patronage with Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa granting Rs 25 lakh for it, has experienced its share of controversies already. We had earlier reported the appeal made by director Ameer to CM Jayalalitha to boycott the event since two critically acclaimed films, ‘Senkadal’ and ‘Thenmerku Paruvakatru,’ are not being screened.

Maker of ‘Senkadal’ (Dead Sea), Leena Manimekalai, and some of her supporters, rasied slogans and carried banners during the inauguration of CIFF here, attended by the likes of Tamil Nadu Information Minister K T Rajenthira Balaji, filmmaker Shekhar kapur, president of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, R Sarathkumar , Ambika, Karthika Nair, Priya Anand, Rohini and many others.
