Vivegam, one of the most awaited films of the year, has finally hit the screens and how! The film, which marks the third film in succession for Ajith Kumar in Siva’s direction, had become a craze with Ajith’s fans thanks to the star’s chiseled six-pack abs look revealed in the film’s promotional photographs. The fact that the film had been shot majorly in Bulgaria’s hitherto unseen locations had also upped the ante. Now that the film is finally up for review, let’s see what it has got to offer for Ajith’s fans and movie-goers.

Storyline

Releasing in Ajith’s 25th year in the entertainment industry, Vivegam has an interesting script. A gang, notorious for causing earthquakes by triggering them with planned under-ground nuclear explosions, makes yet another attempts to explode a couple of nuclear bombs which lay buried deep into the earth.

An anti-terrorist squad (on espionage) is sent to take on the gang and stop its evil acts. Ajay Kumar (Ajith) is helped in his work by a trained hacker Natasha (Akshara) who gets killed mid-way. Ajay realizes only later that one of his close friends Aryan (Vivek Oberoi) was the brainchild behind the terrorists’ plans. The rest of the film is about how he goes about in checkmating and thwarting the opponents’ evil plans.

Script analysis

There are questions galore: which country has a spy network which tracks down hidden nuclear bombs? From the start to the finish, the guns are firing in the film. In his effort to show Ajith as a ‘super-hero’, Siva appears to have gone overboard on a few occasions: though 20-30 persons are firing at will targeting Ajith, he manages to evade all their bullets and escapes unscathed; he also jumps from a huge dam and on his way (freefall) to the ground, picks up his guns and takes the lives of a few of his opponents! Vivek Oberoi does a huge favour to Ajith by constantly uttering punch-dialogues on Ajith’s behalf. On his part, Ajith too utters quite a few punch-dialogues which obviously make his fans go mad with joy.

Audiences may not have a problem with an out-and-out action film but the director should have planned more carefully as to how to space out those action sequences.

Performance analysis

As it happens with most action-packed films, Ajith, the protagonist, gets very little chance to prove his acting credentials or to emote in a big way. The role appears just tailor-made for him and he carries the role very nicely with his characteristic charisma and his own brand of style and dialogue-delivery. Ajith looks as smart as he always does and has sweated a lot for his physique and for the action-packed sequences. Kajal, who plays his wife, doesn’t have much scope to act and as always, looks drop-dead gorgeous.

Akshara’s debut film could have had more screen-space for her. Karunakaran appears briefly before he disappears into nothingness. Anirudh’s music and songs are quite popular; he dazzles especially in background score. Vetri’s camera work, some sincere and amazing art-work, sleek editing, make the film a must-watch for die-hard fans of Ajith Kumar.

Positives:

• Ajith’s personality & screen presence
• Action sequences;
• Grandeur in production; and
• Music and background score

Negatives:

• Too many sequences to show the hero as a super-hero;
• Weak storyline and script;
• Unwa(rra)nted punch-dialogues of the antagonist;
• Tossing out acceptable logic

Verdict: Director Siva has mastered the art of exploiting Ajith’s dram-looks and has made the actor sweat it out in many sequences. The movie is absolutely grand but some more sincerity in script-writing and story could have made the film look more credible.

Vivegam: Watch for it only and exclusively for Ajith if not for anything else!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
