Mankatha Music Review – Yuvan promises to set the dance floor burning

MankathaAjith Kumar’s silver jubilee movie and what better way than to collaborate with Yuvan Shankar Raja. We present to you a review of the songs in the Thala starrer.

Vilaiyaadu Mankatha
Singers: Yuvan Shankar Raja, Ranjith, Sucharitha, Anita, Premgi Amaren
Lyrics: Gangai Amaran, Sucharitha (Hindi), Yuvan Shankar Raja (English)

Rating: 4/5

An awesome beginning with this crazy track that has a slow ride initially nevertheless the gusto chants from the crowd in the background make up for the lost glory as the song gradually builds pace. The tune has surely made a place amongst all the Thala fans already with its characteristic blend of gimmicky vocals and the villainous vocals that encloses it as an offbeat track all together. Spicy indeed, isn’t it?

Nee Naan
Singers: SPB Charan, Bhavatharini
Lyrics: Niranjan Bharathi

Rating: 4/5

A Latin number, with a ballad twist. Bhavatharini has surely complimented SPB well, we were surprised listening to this one, Yuvan has surely been flipping his dad’s yesteryear records as the song has an obvious shadow of Isaignani Ilairaja and the duet magic he creates.

Vaada Bin Laada
Singers: Krish, Suchitra
Lyrics: Vaali

Rating: 3/5

Arrpegiated synths and the robotic vocals that have come to be Yuvan’s trademark appear here again. A perfect contrast to Nee Naan. Blend in some 80’s retro effects along with some crazy string bending. Well although this one did not make it in our list as there has been an abundance of instruments in some sections that just overpowered our listening capabilities. A careful listen could have avoided the collision of many sounds. Vaali’s lyrical efforts have been out of this world as usual.

Machi Open the Bottle
Singers: Haricharan, Mano, Naveen, Premji, Tippu
Lyrics: Vaali

Rating: 2/5

Machi open the bottle is an outright kuthu flavored track . Premji makes his arrival and sets the mood in style , as we  progress listening to the  the track it tumbles into crazy shuffling beats. Well, it is time to dance folks and do we need to remind you ?Don’t forget your bottles!

Singers: Madhushree, Yuvan Shankar Raja
Lyrics: Vaali

Rating: 4.5/5

This one is an attempt to satisfy those who were waiting for a smooth track to tickle their ears; all credits to Madhushree who has made it a wonderful experience coupled along with Yuvan himself. Hey Yuvan you saved the reddest cherry for yourself isn’t it? A great track.

Balle Lakka
Karthik, Vijay Yesudas, Anusha Dhayanidhi
Lyrics: Gangai Amaran

Rating: 4/5

As Karthik and Vijay Yesudas take turns and make it seem like a male duet Anusha Dhayanidhi slips in with her melodious tone.Although a debutant she has not disappointed with her short stint in the song. The tune saturates with a combination of sc-fi wanderings and crazy dhol beats. Please don’t mistake it for being similar to the Rajnikanth’s number from Sivaji. Well this track is the second time in the album that Yuvan has infused Hindi lyrics, we wonder if we will see more of  his latest obsession in the upcoming tunes.

Mankatha won’t disappoint the ones who would love to dance and have a ball; moreover there are a few melodies one can relax to. Yuvan Shankar Raja continues to experiment with electronic soundscapes and it won’t be a surprise if we termed his experience ‘wild.’
