Director-General of Police, West Bengal has penned a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart requesting for help in tracing Justice Karnan if the latter is found to be ‘absconding’ somewhere in Tamil Nadu.
Justice Karnan, who was earlier serving at the Chennai High Court a few years back, made several complaints against other Judges including the then Chief Justice S.K. Kaul which was strongly objected to by the judicial fraternity after which the Supreme Court filed a suo moto ‘Contempt of Court’ case against Justice Karnan. He was also shifted to serve at the Kolkata High Court.
In the meantime, as Karnan didn’t appear for the hearing at the apex Court many times, a Constitution Bench of the SC headed by the Chief Justice of India ordered that Justice Karnan should undergo psychological test. Justice Karnan, in turn, passed an order stating that all the Judges in the Bench should undergo the test and he also ‘sentenced’ them to 6-months of rigorous imprisonment under the SC/ST POA Act.
This infuriated the apex Court which sentenced Justice Karnan to serve 6 months in prison. Justice Karnan filed an appeal against this verdict before absconding to evade arrest. Ironically enough, he had ‘retired’ from service with effect from yesterday but has retired ‘in absentia’, a rare occurrence in any service especially in judicial services.
It is in this backdrop that the West Bengal Govt. has now sought Tamil Nadu Govt.’s help in tracing Justice Karnan’s whereabouts to arrest him.
