Reports from Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital, say that 16 Tamil fishermen toiling in various prisons in Lanka might be freed on Monday (today) on the eve of visit to India of the newly-elected Lankan president Ranil Vickremasinghe.

The fishermen were taken into custody by the Lankan Navy in its latest spell of atrocity on hapless Tamil fishermen when they were fishing near Kodiyakarai near South-East of Katchativu on 01st September. As per orders passed by a Jaffna Court, they were remanded to custody and put behind bars.

In the meantime, Lankan president Ranil Vickremasingha is to arrive in New Delhi on official visit today. It has been reported that on the eve of his visit to Lanka and as a goodwill measure, the Lankan Government might order release of all the fishermen enabling their return to Tamil Nadu.

In all probability, the fishermen would be produced in Court today which would pass orders releasing them.
