Here is an excerpt from our interview with the beautiful Shammu.
Shammu we have always been intrigued by the fact that you have been brought up in an urban setting and your roles in Tamil cinema as Mayilu have been otherwise, do you find it exciting to relate two opposite worlds?
Although I grew up in the United States, I hail from Neyveli. During my growing years, I used to come down to India often. I used to frequently visit Madurai too. So, getting used to the local culture was not hard. I even dubbed for the film in the Madurai dialect. It was fun, I must say. Mayilu taps into a very different theme that has not been explored before in Tamil cinema. That’s what makes it really special. So, I have great appreciation for the people behind this project.
You seem to have a preference for rural settings?
Well, nothing like that. The characters I played in Kanchivaram, Malayan and my forthcoming release Mayilu come from a rural milieu. After Kanchivaram, I started getting offers on the same lines. Though my character in Maathi Yosi was a little different, the film was set in a rustic backdrop. I really want to explore cinema.
You surely are promising star for the Kollywood industry.Could you please shed some more light on your role in Mayilu.
Thanks. I play a typical village belle from Madurai who falls in love with a member of the Kodangi tribe, played by debutant Shri. Mayilu is someone who always likes things to go her way. This was supposed to be my debut film as I signed it even before Kanchivaram. It was great to team up with Prakash Raj sir again the producer of the film. Jeevan who directed Pa Vijay’s Gnabagangal is wielding the megaphone for this project. He is an extremely talented filmmaker and very hardworking. He was instrumental in finishing the project in 30-45 days, and all of this, in a single schedule. That’s commendable.
Oh it surely is, so what about your bilingual projects with Krishnudu and Yuvan.
The Tamil version is called Kallaattam and it’s going to be a purely commercial potboiler. I’m eagerly looking forward to it.
2011 has arrived, what surprises do you have for us Shammu?
Haha! I just want to do a lot of good films this year and experiment with my characters. I love traveling and would love to explore places that I haven’t been to. Hopefully, all my dreams will come true this year.
Wow! Thanks for such a lovely talk. Our best wishes with you for the new year, have a jolly ride this year we are sure your crazy fans are waiting for your next release.
