Reports close to the Unit of Vijay’s upcoming film ‘Velayudham’ say that the film has already overshot its original budget by at least Rs.10 crores. The film is being produced by ‘Ascar’ Ravichandran and directed by ‘Jayam’ Raja, who is directing a Tamil film from outside his family fold for the first time. All his Tamil films so far have starred his younger sibling ‘Jayam’ Ravi as the hero and have been huge hits at the box-office.
Vijay, who had a hit film in ‘Kaavalan’ early this year, is presently starring in a couple of films simultaneously. One is ‘Velayudham’ opposite Genelia and Hansika while the other is ‘Nanban’ directed by Shankar. Remake of the Hindi film ‘3 Idiots’, Nanban has the picture-perfect Ileana opposite him along with Jiiva and Srikanth.
Saranya Mohan and Santhanan play significant roles in ‘Velayudham’, which has reportedly overshot its original budget by Rs.10 crores. Incidentally, it’s a remake of the Telugu hit ‘Azad’ and was planned to be shot at a huge budget of Rs.35 crores. Now that the shooting has just been wrapped up, a rough estimate has revealed that the film has been shot at a budget of Rs.45 crores.
The grand songs, the graphics work and the lavish sets have reportedly had their toll on the overall budget, it is learnt. The Rs.10 crores that has gone over and above the original calculation has jolted the producer, who is in a pensive mood as to whether the film would recover its budget in the first two weeks of its theatrical release.
As Vijay and his father and director S.A. Chandrasekaran are close to the ruling alliance, getting theatres won’t pose much of a problem, it is said. The film is expected to do well at the rural sides as well as at the centres abroad where it might be released.
As such, Ravichandran may not turn out to be the loser at all!
