Vidya Balan refuses to put on sleeveless blouse

Palakkad-born Vidya Balan is said to be playing the role of her life in her upcoming Bollywood film titled ‘The Dirty Picture’. The significance of the film is that Vidya is playing the title role in the film, which is based on the life and times of ‘Silk’ Smitha, who dazzled as Kollywood’s first-ever ‘item girl’ for more than a decade throughout the eighties and till the mid-nineties.

Vidya reportedly did a lot of home-work prior to taking up the offer to star in the film, produced by Ektaa Kapoor, ‘queen bee’ of Indian soaps. In her heydays, ‘Silk’ Smitha as Tamil cinema’s leading ‘item girl’ and paired up opposite all the leading heroes including the likes of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijaykanth, Sathyaraj, Prabhu and Karthick, to name a few. The actress, though, had a tragic demise by committing suicide.

Till date, the mystery shrouding her death hasn’t yet been cracked by the Police. The usually slim-looking Vidya put on some flab around her waist in order to bring the look of ‘Silm’. The actress, who has a knack of taking on roles with substance, shot for a ‘bathing sequence’ some time back. She, however, is apprehensive that putting on a ‘sleeveless’ dress might ‘expose’ her under-arms and shoulder, which looks visible ‘bigger’ than it was some time back.

Vidya has told her costume designer Niharika Khan that she’s ready to put on any costume except ‘sleeve’ blouses and dresses. Critics and movie-goers feel that the ‘Parineeta’ fame actress, is the best bet to play Smitha’s role and to bring on-screen the vicissitudes that marked the late actress’ life.

We too hope Vidya would do a fine job!
