The phenomenal success of Mankatha has put Ajith back in the top in Kollywood. The film which was the actor’s landmark 50th film, had a huge star cast including Arjun, Trisha, Lakshmi Rai, Anjali, Andrea Jermaiah, Premgi, Vaibhav and Kainaat Arora and was directed by Venkatprabhu. Reports earlier said that following the film’s success, Ajith might once again join hands with Venkat for his next film.
In all probability, Billa-2 would be Ajith’s next release as he had already started working for the film soon after wrapping up Mankatha. The question now is as to who would be directing his 52nd film. Ajith has reportedly committed himself to star in producer A.M. Rathnam’s next film and has reportedly been assured a pay cheque of Rs.17 crores. It now remains to be seen as to who takes over the reins of directing the film.
Though Ajith met Maniratam during the making of Mankatha, it looks unlikely that the ace director would be directing him at this moment. Ajith reportedly made it known to Mani that they could work together after a few years and not now. Then rumours erupted claiming that ‘Jayam’ Raja would be directing Ajith, soon after completing Vijay’s Velayudham. Later, Raja denied the possibility of directing Ajith in the near future.
It could finally be either Shankar or Vishnuvardhan who would be directing Rathnam’s film, it is learnt. Vishnuvardhan, who is presently directing the Telugu film ‘Shadow’, might not be free when Ajih wraps up Billa-2. Shankar, who is awaiting the right opportunity to make a film for Rathnam to erase the bad memories of Boys, might step in to direct Ajith, it is strongly rumoured.
