Kamal Haasan’s dream project Maruthanayagam was started with much fanfare. The Queen of Elizabeth herself attended the high-profile muhurat of the film held in Chennai way back in 1997. The film’s shooting, however, couldn’t proceed beyond the shooting of the trailer as not many were willing to pump in millions of rupees in a Kamal film as they were apprehensive about the box-office returns.
In the past, Kamal has said many times that none of the producers were ready to invist the Rs.50 crore he wanted to complete the project (this figure should have tripled by now). More than once, he had stated that he wanted to re-start the film’s shoot but nothing occurred till date. The latest info is that Kamal might soon re-launch the film and might offer a parallel role to close friend and superstar Rajinikanth.
Some time back, it was rumoured that Sun Pictures might take over the film’s production but nothing of that sort happened. Kamal, speaking to a leading Mumbai daily recently, has said that he planned to rope in superstar Rajinikanth in the film and re-start the shooting schedule at the earliest.
“There is a particular role in Maruthanayagam which would suit Rajini very well. Though we have done more than 10 films together, we haven’t starred together in any film for more than 2 decades now. The roles I have for both of us in the film may not fit any other heroes either; as such, I’m happy to announce that I’d be starring with Rajini in this big-budget film,” says Kamal Haasan.
