It appears that the jinx of transforming the epic classic ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ penned by the legendary author Kalki still continues in Kollywood. The rumour about the abandoning of the film has been gaining strength over the past few days, it is learnt.
Ace director Maniratnam, who announced with much fanfare the efforts to bring to celluloid version the unforgettable novel by Kalki, is said to be having ‘second thoughts’ about going any further with the making of the film!
The film, which involves a mega-budget of more than 100 crores, was to star Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Arya, Tollywood’s Mahesh Bahu and actress Anushka besides Sathyaraj in lead roles. The casting was just underway as more than 20-25 characters in the film are to be chosen from prominent artistes.
Neither any official reason has been given for this nor are those concerned with the film ready to open up. Earlier the legendary MGR attempted to make the film version of the classic with director Mahendran’s help but when he became the State’s chief minister, the work had to be ‘abandoned’. Kamal Haasan then tried the same but couldn’t proceed any further than the announcement about the film.
Maniratnam, though, looked to have the full financial backing of a major production house and had selected some lead artistes and even locations for the shoot of the film. The rumour about the ‘abandoning’ hasn’t yet been confirmed or denied by the ace director!
