Ace director Maniratnam has denied press reports that his upcoming film has been titled Pookadai. The director is all set to launch teenager Gautham, son of actor Karthik, as the hero in his next directorial venture. He regretted the trend among the journos of giving title to films on their own and said that the proposed film would be better off without any such controversies in the days to come.
Mani has started the preparatory work that preludes the launch of the film’s shooting. Media reports have been claiming for some time that the title Pookadai has been finalized. Yet, Mani had kept quiet all along, unwilling to comment about it. Usually, Mani remains tight-lipped about his film’s title and the crew. Only when he uses the print media to publicize the film would the rumours about the titled stand resolved.
There have been allegations that over the past many years, Mani has been using it as a publicity technique so that his film under production gets the requisite coverage in the print and television media. The same thing happened even when Mani’s earlier films like Aydha Ezhuthu and Raavanan were in the making. Obviously, when the title of Pookadai appeared in the press some time back, it was expected that Mani would confirm it later.
In a related development, an assistant director Satish who had been working under director Saran for a few years, has claimed that the title Pookadai was his as he had the same registered with the Producers’ Council. When Mani came to know that the title had already been registered by another party, he shot back saying “I never claimed that the title Pookadai belonged to me. Why should I bother about something about which I have nothing to do?”
