After many months of courtship and after denying hard that they were ‘mere friends’, actress Genelia D’Souza and Bollywood actor Ritesh Deshmukh finally got engaged. Though the Goan girl and the Marathi guy were spotted quite often in various places, the had always held that it was the ‘bond of friendship’ which held them together and that denied that there was any ‘love affair’ brewing between them.
Genelia debuted in Tamil films as Harini in Shankar’s Boys many years back and after the film’s no-show, went back to her original name of Genelia. She has starred in a few Tamil in films including Vijay’s Sachein, ‘Jayam’ Ravi’s Santosh Subramaniam and the Dhanush-starrer Uthamaputhiran. She has a big Deepavali release coming up in Velayudham, a film in which she gets to pair up opposite Vijay for the second time in her career.
The couple has announced their engagement officially, thereby putting an end to the endless rumours about them floating in Bollywood. Even last week, Genelia had categorically denied that she had no marriage plans whatsoever in the ‘near future’. Ritesh is the son of Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Maharashtra chief minister and presently a Minister in the Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The engagement ceremony took part at Deshmuhk’s residence, it is reported. Deshmukh Sr. had earlier opposed the marriage saying that he would never be able to accept an actress as the bahu (daughter-in-law) of the family. He, however, appears to have undergone change of heart after seeing the determination of the couple to stay united at any cost. The date of the marriage would be announced later.
Let’s wish the chirpy Genelia and Ritesh a happily married life in advance!
