Kutti puli for release on May 30th

Kutti Pulli an offering from Bhoopathi Pandian’s assistant – Muthiah, which features Sasikumar and Lakshmi Menon, is nearing the expected release date. The film is all set to hit the screens by the end of this month, it promises to bring along an intense performance from the lead pair.

Likewise, fans of Sasikumar await his thrilling performances that they saw in flicks such as Subramaniapuram, Nadodigal and Sundarapandian. Anchored with support from Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant banner, Kutti Puli’s music was launched a few days ago. On the occasion, Dhanush K Raja, was present as he unleashed the album and promoted the flick in his own special way.

Following the event, this flick which has been under the critical review from censor board for the past week, has cleared with a clean U/A certificate to much relief of the Kutti Puli crew, who are celebrating this moment.

Finally, the hard work of director Hari and his men has started showing its magic for Singam 2′s promotions. Surya fans worldwide logged on to media sharing sites on May 16, 5 pm precisely,  as they awaited their front-man to arrive in style.

As expected, the first look teaser has become viral on popular website Youtube.com as it amassed 2.5 lakhs hits in the first day alone!! Undoubtedly it was a wholesome treat for onlookers as a larger than life portrayal of Surya as police officer S Duraisingam, saw him taking charge and setting the wrongs right. Be it punching down cars or punching down men, for Duraisingam it was easy as a pie.

Shot across premier locales internationally, this flick features hourglass beauties Anushka Shetty and Hansika Motwani in the lead. In addition, Anjali is here to make it up for her fans with a raunchy item number on the offer, supported by thumping beats from music composer Devi Sri Prasad.

Mohan Lal Birthday celebration at Jilla Shooting Spot

The shoots of Jilla which is being promoted as a mega budget 56th project featuring Illayathalapathy Vijay in the lead, supported by Mollywood’s Mohan Lal (fondly known as Lalettan by his fans), Kajal Agarwal, Poornima Bhagyaraj and a host of other talents is progressing swiftly.

However, a recent occasion made way for the team to take a small break from their marathon shoot schedules which commenced from May 12 in Karaikudi. This day was special as Mollywood’s Lalettan turned 53 on the sets.

Directed by debutante Nesan, this project will see Mohan Lal & Poornima Bhagyaraj essaying an onscreen duo of husband & wife. Incidentally, the duo also made their debut together in Malayalam for director Fazil’s Manjil Virinja Pookal 33 years ago !!!

Happy for her friend Poornima says “Manjil Virinja Pookkal,was a start for both of us, but more importantly I would remember it as a project which saw the birth Malayalam cinemas new superstar.All these years, Lal and I have been good friends and I am so happy that apart from Malayalam cinema, where he is the numero uno star, he is also part of Tamil movies too.”

Anirudh Ravichander had recently revealed about London based R&B crooner – Arjun Coomaraswamy, part of his lineup for Vanakkam Chennai. Coomaraswamy had been approached as he had managed to register a viral video, rendering Anirudh’s most successful composition, Kolaveri Di in his own style.

Ending more than two years of his boycott by Kollywood, ace comedian Vadivelu has started shooting for his upcoming film Gaja Buja Buja Gaja Tenali Ramanum Krishnadevarayarum (too lengthy, isn’t it?). In order to ensure that his ‘comeback’ to Tamil films after two years, Vadivelu conducted his daughter’s wedding as a low-key affair last month.

The film, a period flick, is based upon the folklore tales of king Krishna Devaraya and his shrewd and witty minister Tenali Raman. Beauty queen Parvathy Omanakuttan was first approached by the makers of the film to pair up opposite Vadivelu but as she demanded a hefty sum of  Rs.1.5 crores as fee, Sneha Ullal was the next choice of the producer but she expressed her desire not to pair up opposite Vadivelu after which Meenakshi Dixit was finalized.

Meenakshi, incidentally, starred opposite Vijayakanth in his 2010 film Virudhagiri. Yuvraj  who earlier directed Potta Potti, would be the director of Tenali Raman. Huge sets resembling the palaces of kings of yesteryears have been erected inside the premises of AVM Studios where the film would be shot.

Will this be jackpot for  Meenakshi, who has been mostly spotted in only item numbers.

Vetkathai Kettal Enna Tharuvai

Krithika, the debuting heroine in the recently released movie Vetkathai Kettal Enna Tharuvai, has reportedly refused to oblige the director’s request when she was asked to utter the word Porukki (rascal) for a sequence in the film. Krithika is paired opposite Pidichirukku Ashok in the film which is produced by Ramachandran.

Ramachandran is of the opinion that both Ashok, who has got a chance to play a lead role in a film after many years, and Krithika, the debutant, had caused them enough trouble during the shoot of the film. It’s indeed surprising to hear a producer complain about the lead pair, especially one of them being a newcomer and the other who badly needs a hit film to sustain his career in the industry.

“I cast Ashok, who had been languishing without any films to his credit, as the hero in my film. Instead of offering me his fullest possible cooperation, Ashok has made us sweat a lot by his non-cooperative attitude. As if Ashok’s attitude is not enough, the debutant heroine Krithika also caused her own share of hurdles to us while the shooting schedule was held.

“When asked to utter a word porukki in the film, Krithika flatly refused to do so saying that it might affect her ‘image’. It’s indeed surprising that a newcomer has the temerity to talk of a non-existing ‘image’. When huge stars don’t bother about their images and do all sorts of roles, why should a newcomer talk of image in the first place?” asks a worried looking Ramachandran.

Krithika has also reportedly told her producer that she would not be promoting the film.

Nandita

Nandita is certainly on Cloud 9 these days. The actress, who debuted in Tamil films as heroine with last year’s runaway hit Attakathi directed by debutant director Pa Ranjith, has had her second successful venture in her second film in Ethir Neechal where she played a significant role opposite Sivakarthikeyan.

Bangalore-born Nandita, who debuted as an actress with the Kannada flick Nanda Loves Nanditha in 2008, waited for more than 4 years to get a break in Tamil and finally landed up in Tamil films with Attakathi. After a promising performance in the film, she has now become a successful actress with two successful films in her kitty. In a free-wheeling interview, Nandita opens about the days preceding her becoming an actress.

“It was my childhood dream to become an actress. However, my parents were dead against my idea and didn’t want me to get into the film industry. In order to convince them to agree to my choice of becoming an actress, I once went into my room and locked it from inside. For three days, I neither spoke to anyone nor had any food and starved. Finally, my parents agreed to my decision but imposed certain conditions.

“First among those conditions was that I should first complete my education and then make an effort to get into the entertainment industry. My Nalanum Nandhiniyum is to release shortly and I hope to make score a hat-trick of successes in Kollywood with this film. I starred in Ethir Neechal sans make-up and am ready to take on roles which offer me scope to display my acting instincts,” concludes Nandita, who is fast learning Tamil to dub in her own voice.

Lakshmi Menon

Teenager Lakshmi Menon is surely one of the few actresses who managed to leave a huge impression in recent times in the minds of the audiences. Lakshmi debuted in Tamil films as heroine with last year’s hit film Sundarapandian opposite Sasikumar and then followed it up with the bumper-hit Kumki directed by Prabhu Solomon. Actually, Kumki was to be her launch-pad in Tamil films but Sundarapandian had released earlier.

Lakshmi, who turned 17 on Sunday (19th May), celebrated her birthday in Chennai and not at her native Cochin in Kerala. With back-to-back hits in her kitty and with filmmakers feeling that she has it in her to be a frontline heroine over a period of time, Lakshmi has become one of the most sought-after actresses in Tamil and has many films on her hands including Kutti Puli, Manja Pai, Sippai and Pandiya Nadu.

Years of continued stay in Chennai has ensured that Lakshmi Menon’s diction of Tamil a perfect one. The fact that she emotes well and dubs in her own voice for her roles in films has added extra-value to her as an actress. Though she starred in two Malayalam films before her entry into Kollywood, it was Kumki which showed to the world how good an actress she can be if groomed in a proper manner.

Kutti Puli is likely to release in theatres next month. Lakshmi, who recently appeared for the Class X exams in her home State of Kerala, is awaiting the results with crossed fingers but that didn’t deter her from celebrating her birthday in a grand manner. “I went shopping in the city with my grand-mother and brought a gold chain. Being the first birthday after I gained recognition in Kollywood, it’s really an unforgettable birthday for me,” says the Menon girl.

2013 releases

Even before the completion of the first five months of the present year, Kollywood is to hit a century of films. It might be difficult to believe but a whopping number of more than 100 films would have hit the screens by end-May.

Easily, this might be a record-breaking year for Kollywood in respect of the number of films releasing each year. A rough estimate tells trade pundits that a minimum of 250 films might have hit the screens before the end of the current calendar year.

As many as 197 films hit the screens last year including some films which were dubbed into Tamil. It now appears that this figure might be achieved before the end of the third quarter of the present calendar year. Close to 100 films have so far hit the screens this year including 21 films which were dubbed into Tamil from other languages.

With a couple of Fridays to go before the end of May, it is believed that at least 10 more films would be released in these two weeks. And the chance of Kollywood hitting a ‘century of films’ in just five months of an year has become very much of a reality now. More than 60 films had been launched in recent times and taking this into consideration, it can be concluded that the number of films releasing before December this year might cross even 250, which would be a new record for Kollywood.

If it happens, 2013 might turn out to be a historic year for Tamil films in terms of quantity.

Niveda Thomas

Actress Niveda Thomas is all set to repeat her feat of playing Vijay’s sister in Dharani’s Kuruvi six years back. The 17-year old actress, who played Vijay’s kid-sister in Kuruvi, is all set to play his grown-up younger sister in his upcoming film titled Jilla which also has Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in a significant role of Vijay’s father.

Niveda, who also starred in Raghava Lawrence’s Rajadhi Raja, played a significant role in Sasikumar’s Poraali which released in December, 2011. Though she had earlier played Vijay’s sister in Kuruvi, it was her role as a Petrol Pump attendant which bagged her the coveted role in Jilla.

Set in the backdrop of Madurai, it is said that the character essayed by Niveda in the film is very significant as the entire story revolves around her. Obviously, like many of Vijay’s earlier films, the brother-sister sentiment would be amply displayed in this film as well.

Talking about the offer to star as a matured teenager in Vijay’s film, Niveda says “I’m happy to have landed a character where I have the scope to perform. I’m sure I shall get many offers to star in Tamil films (preferably as heroine) once Jilla releases!”

Kamal Hassan with Vishwaroopam Painting Photos

Now that Kamal Haasan’s latest film Vishwaroopam has completed its 100-day run, popular artist Sridhar, presented Kamal with a painting to mark the achievement.

Vishwaroopam, which was produced and directed by Kamal besides playing the lead role in it, met with unprecedented opposition from Muslim groups in the State as they objected to certain sequences in the film. Its release was also opposed to by the theatre-owners across the State as they were at sea against Kamal Haasan’s idea of releasing the film on television via DTH before it is released in theatres. Kamal later abandoned the idea.

Kamal became so desperate that he even announced that he was ready to shift to a more ‘secular’ State or country, shunning Chennai. After he agreed to delete some sequences in the film and at the behest of the State Government’s intervention, the release on the film’s ban was lifted and it finally released in Tamil Nadu on 7th February. Controversy helped the film’s fortunes at the box-office and it was even reported that the film had collected more than Rs.200 crores world-over.

A couple of days, Vishwaroopam reached the coveted landmark of 100 days in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere. On the occasion, popular artist Sridhar presented Kamal Haasan with a painting resembling his image from the film. Sridhar visited Kamal’s residence with his daughter Varuna and presented the painting. Reports say that Kamal was moved by the totally unexpected gift from the noted painter.

Anirudh Ravichander

A.R. Murugadoss, who directed last year’s super-duper hit Vijay-Kajal Agarwal starrer Thuppakki, is to direct Vijay again in his next directorial venture in Tamil. In recent times, Murugadoss has also taken the avatar of a producer and has made films such as Engeyum Eppodhum and Vathikuchi  Raja Rani, his third production venture starring Arya, Jai and Nayantara in lead roles, is proceeding smoothly at present.

After his first couple of films in Dheena and Ramana wherein he worked with Yuvan Shankar Raja and Ilaiyaraja, ARM had always preferred the music of Harris Jayaraj and repeated him in his successive ventures in Ghajini, 7am Arivu and the latest Thuppakki. However, for his untitled Vijay-starrer which would be launched in early 2014, Murugadoss signed up Anirudh as the music director.

Anirudh has had just a couple of releases so far in3 and Ethir Neechal and the music of both the films have become great hits. Though 3, which was Anirudh’s debut film as a music director, didn’t do well at the box-office, all the songs in the film – especially the hugely popular Why This Kolaveri Di number – were loved by the masses. The Kolaveri song not only brought Dhanush international fame but also got him an invite from the Prime Minister for a dinner.

With the box-office success of Ethir Neechal to which his music contributed in good measure, Anirudh has come to be noticed by many leading directors. Sources close to the diminutive Murugadoss say that the director has almost finalized signing up Anirudh for the Vijay-starrer which is likely to go to the floors from next January.

When was the last time that a so called ‘amazing melody’ became an ear worm and you hummed it on repeat mode for days? Well, we too have been victims of similar symptoms. However, it is often disheartening to find others term your new found Illayaraja or Rahman tune, a copy of some other melody that they dug up in their vast music library !

With the advent of digital music storage and media sharing sites, searching for that original  tune has only become much more easier than the bygone vinyl era or the days where cassette recordings, where priced possessions.

Call it a nightmare for the music composer, but he would have never thought that media sharing sites would bring the cat out of the dark and aid in comparison of tunes, with just a click of a button. In fact, it doesn’t surprise us that these days composers in Bollywood, have to present the producers a written indemnity following the rampant plagiarism that is flooding the music scene.

Illayaraja, AR Rahman,Yuvan Shankar Raja, D Imman, Harris Jayaraj to G V Prakash. They maybe the A league composers in Kollywood midst numerous others. But despite prestigious claims of their respective music labels promoting ‘new’ music, derivations point out similarities from Ricky Martin to Pakistani pop sensation Junoon, from yesteryear Hindi and Tamil hits to the Algerian hits of Khaled and from African tunes to Backstreet Boys!!!

Call it inspiration or an accident, after all the seven notes in music are universal to every music system in the world. Where does one draw a line between copying music and being inspired from it ? Before you give it a deep thought, we were wondering if we should consider Dhanush‘s Kolaveri di, an international chart-buster, an original? Have a look before you suggest a convincing take on it.

Monday, the 20th May, 2013 might go down as a red-letter day in the life of ace comedian Vadivelu. The comedian, who had been facing total boycott from the film industry for more than the past two years or so, is all set to face the camera for the first time in two years when he turns up for the commencement of the shooting schedule of his upcoming film titled Gaja Buja Buja Gaja Thenali Raman.

Vadivelu was on top of his trade when he chose to align himself with DMK, the erstwhile ruling party in the State and campaign for it during the 2011 Assembly elections. During his election campaign, he took to task Vijayakanth, the DMDK chief, in almost all his public meetings. As it turned out, the DMK was routed in the elections and AIADMK returned to power with a massive mandate.

As Vijayakanth was Amma’s ally during the elections, none of the producers dared to sign up Vadivelu in their films and invoke the wrath of the ruling party. This resulted in Vadivelu’s continued boycott by filmmakers which appears to have finally come to an end now with the first shoot  of Gaja Buja Buja Gaja Thenali Raman held this morning.

Vadivelu reportedly plays dual roles in the film produced by Kalpathi Ganesh and Kalpathi Suresh on behalf of their banner AGS Entertainers.

Taapsee Pannu and Nayanthara

After enduring successive love failures with Simbu and Prabhu Deva, Nayanthara appears determined not to get into another affair again. Though news of of Nayantara getting closer to Arya, her co-star in Raja Rani and Ajith’s upcoming untitled film directed by Vishnuvardhan is spreading around.

The final schedule of the shoot of Ajith’s film is going on in  Kullu Manali Circuit. Nayan, who is on a comeback trail, is awaiting the release of her first Tamil film in three years (not taking into account the dubbed version of Sri Rama Rajyam and her ‘item number’ with Dhanush in Ethir Neechal).

Of late, Nayan is said to be extremely cautious in choosing her friends from both the genders. The actress reportedly turned down an offer to dance for an ‘item number’ in Bollywood superstar Shak Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Chennai Express but agreed to dance in Ethir Neechal in order to honour a request from her friend Dhanush who starred opposite her in Yaaradi Nee Mohini.

Now Nayan is said to have become a close friend of  Taapsee during the shoot of the Ajith-starrer. Usually, actresses starring together in a film hardly bother to bond with each other but it is not the case with Nayantara and Taapsee, who have become great pals and spend their time during breaks in shoot by eating together, taking photographs of each other and chatting non-stop.

Producer-director-actor Sasikumar found a novel way of celebrating the 100-day run of his latest film Sundarapandian. Instead of conducting a function to commemorate the feat, Sasikumar chose to personally visit the residences of all artistes and technicians who worked for the film’s success to deliver the memento.

Starring Lakshmi Menon and Sasikumar in the lead and directed by debutant director S.R. Prabhakaran, Sundarapandian was declared hit within days of its release in theatres late last year. Sasikumar first presented the memento to Prabhakaran at his mentor Bala’s office in Chennai. Bala blessed his disciple success for the future while presenting the memento.

Sasikumar then visited Lakshmi’s residence with Prabhakaran accompanying him and presented the shield to her after thinking her for her contribution to the film’s success. Vijay Sethupathy, who has become a sought-after hero now but had played one of the villains in the film, was the next to be visited by Sasikumar. Wherever visited, he was surrounded by the neighbours and fans who sought and got autographs from him.

In a signed message, Sasikumar has thanked the print and television media for their continued support to him right from his Subramaniapuram days till Sundarapandian and hoped that the support would continue in future too. Sasikumar’s idea of staying away from spending lavishly and  taking time to visit the individual artiste’s house to present the mementoes deserves appreciation.

Remya Nambeesan Sings for Rummy

Debutant director Balakrishnan is curring making Rummy starring Vijay Sethupathy and Inigo Prabhakar in lead roles. In his first film, Balakrishnan has also made actress Remya Nambeesan of Pizza fame also sing a song. Balakrishnan was apparently impressed by the few Malayalam songs crooned by the actresses and wanted her to sing in his debut film and the actress promptly obliged his request.

Produced by the quartet of K. Gurunathan, P. Yelappan, M. Dharmarajan and K. Balakrishnan on behalf of Sri Valli Films, Rummy has Gayathri and Aishwarya playing the two heroines in the film. Others in the cast include Suri, Jomalluri, Raja, Sanjay, ‘ Munnar’ Ramesh, Sujatha, Janaki, ‘Pasanga’ Sivakumar, ‘Kadal’ Saran, Baby and Vignesh.

Premkumar is the cinematographer of Rummy which has music by Imman and lyrics by Yugabarathy. Raja Mohammed is in charge of editing while Mona Pazhanichamy is penning the dialogues. Dileep Subbaryan and Dhina are working as stunt and dance choreographers respectively in that order. Balakrishnan, who also doubles up as the director, is confident of hitting the bull’s eye at the box-office with Rummy.

The hit pair of Vijay Sethupathy and Gayathri of Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom is coming together again for Rummy. “We all know how interesting Rummy can be in the game of cards. Likewise, life is also an interesting game which has oneself as the central characters. If we set out to travel in a  direction, life invariably takes us in a different route.

“The script of Rummy has been conceived with these thoughts in mind. Vijay, Inigo and Suri play thick friends in the film and the film would not only show their friendship in detail but also goes deep into the romance between the lead pairs and the feelings that go with it,” says Balakrishnan and adds that actress Remya Nambeesan (who paired up opposite Vijay Sethupathy in last year’s Pizza) has sung a song in the film which might turn out as one of the highlights of the film.
