Founded in 2005 by Vijayakanth,as an alternative to the two Dravidian parties, DMDK made its debut in 2006 Assembly elections, with Vijayakanth the sole member of his party winning from the Viruddhachalam seat, and also capturing 8 per cent popular votes. And the party also played spoilsport in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, splitting the opposition votes, particularly affecting AIADMK.
In 2011 it is different story, with the formation of AIADMK -DMDK alliance , there was no third front to split the votes, the alliance walks with exception performance. Speaking on the success Vijayakanth, already a sitting MLA, said the AIADMK front’s success in the elections as “This is people’s victory and the party cadres, not mine. The victory puts an end to family rule.” and also confirmed he would not be demanding a share in power from AIADMK in the next government.
