Actor,DMDK founder and Opposition leader Vijayakanth along with his over 200 of his party workers were arrested today(Dec 26) after they tried to stage a black flag demonstration against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the issues of Mullai Periyar Dam and Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project.
Vijayakanth and his party workers were arrested at Saidapet area in the city, the route taken by PM Manmohan Singh this morning to attend a function at Madras University. The Prime Minister had arrived here last evening and stayed overnight at the Raj Bhavan. He attended a function at Madras University today to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of mathematics wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Condemning what he called the “biased and step-motherly” treatment meted out to Tamil Nadu by the central government on various issues, Vijayakanth said, “The Centre has not done anything to protect the interests of the state, be it on the attacks on fisheremen by Lankan Navy,Koodankulam Nuclear Power Projec, Mullaiperiyar dam row with Kerala and Cauvery issue. It (the centre) had always adopted an indifferent attitude toward Tamil Nadu on all issues”.
“Why should the Prime Minister visit the state at all when he fails to respect the feelings and the pleas of the people of the state”, he charged, adding the visit would in no way help the state in the Mullaiperiyar row.
