Bollywood beauty Vidya Balan has won her first ‘best actress’ award for her latest Hindi film The Dirty Picture (TDP). The Palakkad-born actress, who has made it among the top rung of actresses in Bollywood thanks to her sheer hard-work and dedication, has played the role of Kollywood’s ‘item girl’ Silk Smitha in the film which is based on the life of the late actress.
Known for long as an actress of substance, producer Ektaa Kapoor and director Milan Luthria surprised many within and outside Bollywood when he chose the homely-looking Vidya balan to play Smitha in the film. Given the fact that Smitha’s voluptuous body was her major asset, Luthria ‘changed’ Vidya into a fleshy and admirable woman as Vidya consciously put on flab around her waist and got the curves in no time that Smitha was known for.
The film released a few weeks back and much to the surprise of Vidya’s detractors, has since been declared a hit as it has been doing very well across cinema halls in the country and elsewhere. The film’s success has made Vidya demand and get the amount she wants as fee for her future projects as she has become much in demand. Vidya herself had gone on record saying that playing Smitha in the film has made her more courageous and daring.
Despite law-suits by ‘Silk’ Smitha’s brother and objections by Tamil actor Vinu Chakravarthy, the film has managed huge collections at the box-office. Vidya even faces a case in a Hyderabad Court for starring in ‘obscene’ costumes in some sequences in the film. Despite all this, Vidya has now won the award from a private body named National Media Network which has chosen her as the best actress for her performance in TDP.
She would be presented the award on the 21st January. We congratulate Vidya for her indomitable spirit and the self-belief she had in her abilities!
