Though she has been one of the leading lyricists in Kollywood for more than a decade now, lyricist Thamarai never got the opportunity that many lyricists eagerly look forward to in Tamil films: penning lyrics to Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s tunes. Over the years, penning lyrics to tunes set by the Maestro has almost become the yardstick to measuring a lyricist’s stature in Kollywood.
Thamarai debuted as a lyricist way back in the early past of the last decade with ace director Gautham Vasudev Menon’s debut directorial venture in Minnalae. Ever since, she has become the ‘official lyricist’ in all the films made by Menon. The director, who had only worked with the likes of Harris Jayaraj and A.R. Rahman, has teamed up with the Maestro for the first time for Needhanae En Ponvasantham (NEP).
NEP brings together for the first time on-screen the hot couple of Jiiva and Samantha as the lead pair. Thamarai, in the meanwhile, is mighty happy to have landed up the opportunity of penning lyrics in Ilaiyaraaja’s music. Though the Maestro has already composed two songs for the film, the work vis-à-vis the film has been progressing at a sluggish pace due to the ongoing strike by FEFSI employees.
Billed as a romantic entertainer on the lines of Menon’s Simbu-Trisha starrer Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, NEP is being made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. The trailer of the film’s music, which was released a few days back on the eve of Valentine’s Day, became an instant hit on the Internet. The film is likely to be released in theatres as a summer bonanza to movie-goers.
