Suseendhiran is pleased about Appukutty’s national award

Few would have imagined that the diminutive Appukkutty, who played the lead role in director Suseendhiran’s Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai last year, would have ended up bagging the national award for ‘best supporting actor’ at the 59th national awards announced on Wednesday. Commenting about the feat, Suseendhiran said that he badly wanted Appukkutty to win the award.

“I felt that Appukkutty had done a wonderful job and wanted him to first win the award even if the film missed out. As such, I’m happy for him as he doesn’t have his parents to support him and survives mainly on his will to succeed and the fire in him to make it count. Many criticized me when I signed him up as the lead actor in the film; they were, however, proved wrong when the film released.

“Now, the award has silenced all of them. I wish him many more successes in future,” said Suseendhiran. Meanwhile, Appukkutty doesn’t believe that what has been happening for the past two days is real. “The award is yet to sink in. Suseendhiran, after choosing me to play the lead role, asked me to get acquainted with the horse which also played an ‘important’ role in the film.

“I simply followed my director’s instructions; whatever I have achieved is entirely due to his guidance. I shall remain thankful to him forever. I’m from a remote village and have toiled hard to reach this stage. I decided to get married only after achieving something in life. Now, I’m confident that I’d get married and settle down in life,” says Appukkutty whose next film would be Mannaru.
