The ardent fan club members of actor Simbu protested in front of the BJP office in T. Nagar and raised slogans against party workers for the gesture of making a garland of slippers for the actor’s ‘Vaanam’ movie cut-out at Tambaram M.R. Theatre. They also demanded an apology from the BJP men for alleged disrespect to the actor.
A few BJP men and members of other political outfit had launched a protest against the screening of Vaanam in Chennai recently. Party members said Vaanam showcases Hindus in a bad light. They also objected to a particular scene in which a Hindu leader (said to be a look-alike of Hindu Munani leader Muthalik) forces a young couple(Bharath and Vega) to tie the knot. Moreover, few party members indulged in the act of tearing posters of Vaanam and put a garland of slippers for a cut-out it is said.
Following this, angry members of Simbu’s fan club picketed the BJP office around 10 AM on May 7, 2011. The city police insisted the fans to clear the area as the permission was denied for the protest. But the fans were quite determined about fighting for the right cause saying that there is no need to pull Simbhu for controversies and anything pertaining to the issue must be clarified with director Krish or the producers.
Finally, the police ended up arresting over 50 fan club members and they were released later in the evening.
Simbu’s father and actor T.Rajender on this issue said, “There is nothing wrong in the gesture of fans as they are up here for the right reason. ‘Vaanam’ boasts of an outstanding message to take home and it has created a huge impact on audiences and nothing is done to hurt the feelings. I strongly oppose the persons involved in such activities”.
Meanwhile BJP members have sent legal notices to the film’s director Krish and distributor Dhayanidhi Alagiri of Cloud Nine.
